Hoping to rebound from the disappointing sales of the Sega Saturn, the Sega Dreamcast was launched today back in 1999. It has been said the Dreamcast was ahead of its time when it was released. Back in the ’90s, polygons were huge and blocky and while it ushered in the next generation of gaming, it left a lot to be desired in the looks department. With the introduction of the Dreamcast, Sega transformed gameplay graphics with beautifully realistic detail and super fast frame rates. Two of the best examples of the Dreamcast’s graphical power are Crazy Taxi and Soul Calibur.

Soul Calibur is a highly stylized 3D fighting game in which players duke it out in front of exoctic locales filled with vibrant colors and realistic background animations. To this day, Soul Calibur is considered to be one of the best looking fighters ever released.

Crazy Taxi was originally released in the arcades but was quickly ported to the Dreamcast in 2000. The game takes place in an open world where you are a taxi driver who must find and deliver customers while racing against the clock. Gameplay is fast and furious and the Dreamcast handles it without any lag in the picture or controls.

While the Dreamcast was Sega’s last hurrah in the console market, the system made a huge impact on the next generation of HD visuals in video games.

Tech Tip: I highly recommend using a VGA to HDMI converter to connector your Dreamcast to a modern HDTV. Take note though, not all games support VGA output.
