Escape 2042: The Truth Defenders is Out on Kickstarter

We have seen plenty of games appear on the popular crowdfunding website Kickstarter for various videogame projects over the years, but not many with various different platforms planned. Escape 2042: The Truth Defenders, a brand new 2D platform game from OrionSoft, is being developed for four different platforms: Mega Drive/Genesis, Dreamcast, Game Boy, and Windows.

The game takes place in the year 2042 where the government has slowly progressed into a socialist dictatorship, treating anyone who rises up against them as conspiracy theorists or terrorists and locking them away in high security prisons. The player takes on the role of Eris, a computer engineer and Truth Defenders member, who has recently been detained by the authority. It is up to the player to use Eris’ knowledge of hacking security systems, escape from the prison, and reveal the truth of this government.

Developer, OrionSoft, describes the game as a “fast paced 2D platformer”, but it has more going for it than that. While the game is a 2D platformer at its core, it also has puzzle and adventure elements. The game takes place over three different settings: the prison, a forest, and a desert. There are also some neat looking mini-games (reverse shoot ’em up and abseiling sections) to break up the platform action. In the main platform action itself, the player will have to deal with security cameras, firing enemies, grenades, electronic hacking (doors, laser fields)–plenty to deal with.

The Kickstarter campaign just recently kicked off, with funding already over the €2,000 mark, and with 29 days left to meet their target of €25,000. While the trailer above showcases the Mega Drive/Genesis and Game Boy version, we are told that the Dreamcast and Windows versions will be identical to the Sega 16-bit version, but with enhanced music and audio quality. There are many different rewards available to choose from, too, with the physical media versions available in cartridge only or boxed with cartridge and manual.

There are also some interesting stretch goals available: an enhanced color port of the Game Boy version to PC Engine CD (€27,000), a Japanese translation (€28,000), and voice-over acting in French, English, and Japanese for the Dreamcast, Windows, and PC-Engine CD versions of the game (€30,000). Escape 2042 can also be found on Steam Greenlight where it can be uprated for approval on the Windows version.
