Retro City Rampage is a title that hit Steam just a couple of years ago and has taken off quite well. This indie darling title has been the subject of many editorial writings, podcasts, and discussions on social media. Now, Retro City Rampage DX, an enhanced version of the original, has finally landed on the Android platform. Took long enough.
Little touches that remind us of the good old days of gaming include pixelated graphics and 8-bit people running around. While I am not a fan of pixelated graphics, some games such as Retro City Rampage DX make it work rather than depend on it like a crutch. I mean, the title tells you this is going to be a homage to classic games, so it would look weird if it had PlayStation 4 level graphics, or even Nintendo 64 level.
Retro City Rampage DX, unashamedly, pulls inspiration from many of the classic games we all remember. From Contra, Duck Hunt, and Super Mario Bros to Metroid and Metal Gear, gaming history is all fair game. So are references to movies such as Back to the Future and Bill & Ted’s movies. How many can you recognize?
For purists, there is even a “ROM City Rampage” mode. This mode is 100% accurate for the late 1990’s hardware the game is fashioned after.
Retro City Rampage DX features 60 story based missions, 40 arcades style minigames and a myriad of weapons, vehicles and other things to interact with. Whew. All of that for $5 on Google Play. Go ahead, try and find a better deal.
Anyone that passed on the Steam release will want to grab Retro City Rampage DX now that it is on Android.
