Sega released the original Sonic 2 on the Sega Master System back in 1992–24 years ago. That is quite a while ago. Fans have seemingly clamored for more 2D Sonic the Hedgehog games over the years that followed. For short periods it seemed as if Sega was going to listen to fans and give them more of the blue hedgehog. Other years it was apparent that Sega was squarely focused on 3D Sonic, fans wanting it or not. Now, I have had a chance to put a remake of Sonic 2 for the Sega Master System through a short play through. This remaster, as it is being referred to, was released by MrCat, a prolific game hacker who is popular in the scene. What he has done here is beyond anything Sega released on the Sega Master System, by far.
Sonic 2 ReMastered, as MrCat calls it, is based on the original game by Sega, just better. First, Sonic 2 ReMastered features three new zones: Seaside Hill Zone, Cyan Speedway Zone, and Dream Gate Zone. This Sonic 2 hack has been in the works for several years. When you check out the video above you may realize why. It is simply stunning what MrCat has been able to achieve on the 8-bit Sega Master System console.
My hands on video, embedded above, shows off the first zone. What we have here is an all new graphical tour de force on the Sega Master System console. Sonic fans will want to check this hack out. Sonic 2 ReMastered runs fast and fluid. There are tons of little things included from animations to little details in the background (what secrets have you found?).
If you are going to find all of the little details in the backgrounds you will obviously have to slow down and smell the roses. That is fine with me as Sonic 2 ReMastered is quite good looking.
