New Sega Genesis games don’t come along every day. That is why when I found out about Coffee Crisis by Mega Cat Studios, it was already on my “interested” list. Finding out that Coffee Crisis was a brawler similar to Final Fight and Streets of Rage just moved it into my “must cover” category. While we see a few action or puzzle games on the Sega Genesis thanks to independent developers, we hardly see new brawlers. Currently in the last day of their Kickstarter campaign, Coffee Crisis is already a success but you have time to support it and secure your copy.
Retro Gaming Magazine) Please introduce yourself
Mega Cat Studios) We’re Mega Cat Studios; a group of retro game collectors and techies releasing games for old consoles, like so many others. Between all of us, we’ve been working on retro games for a few years as a hobby. This is the first one we’re going to commercialize and sell. Right now, we’re adding some additional detail to some of the levels and doing some final play testing to make sure the final version exceeds all expectations the best we can.
RGM) What inspired you to create a brawler of the Sega Genesis?
MCS) Beat em ups are one of my long time most favored genres. As an adult retro gamer, they’re just as much fun as they were when we were kids: you can pick the controller up, play for 15 minutes when you find a window and still enjoy it just as much without having to worry where you left off. That said . . . who doesn’t like the satisfaction that comes from kicking, punching and head-butting aliens?
RGM) What are your biggest challenges at this stage of development?
MCS) Lots of refactoring to make sure speed is right, lots of group play testing to make sure we’re getting good feedback from the community we’re part of. This is the more pain-staking part, but absolutely the most enjoyable. There’s something incredible about seeing a game realized and in its final few percentage points of being complete.
RGM) The Kickstarter is almost funded. Is there anything you would like to say to potential backers that haven’t taken the plunge yet?
MCS) We have one week left and 25% left to go. Help us cross the finish line and add a new beat-’em-up to your Genesis collection today!
RGM) Anything you would like to say to your fans that are reading this?
MCS) We’re collectors and players first. After several months of development, we’re ecstatic to get this game out there. All of the feedback and encouragement from the community has been great–thank you all for the shares, fan art and messages the past three weeks!
Hit their Kickstarter, you better hurry, and secure your copy of Coffee Crisis today!
