The Sega Genesis was always the “second run” console when it came to ports from other platforms. This happened nearly all the time throughout the life of Sega’s 16-Bit console. One time in the history of the console, Sega did come out ahead concerning a port. That was Mortal Kombat and only because Nintendo heavily censored the Super Nintendo version. Acclaim even censored the Genesis version, only fixed by entering a code, so for a short period it looked like the Genesis version was stiffed again. While the Sega Genesis faltered as far as colors on screen, it did have the power of Sega behind it and that meant relaxed censoring of content. That was great till Mortal Kombat II came out and Nintendo had wizened up about things. By the time we got to Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on the Genesis we saw other limitations imposed on the Genesis version. Content was being cut for whatever reason – lazy programming, lack of storage, whatever – stuff was getting cut in the transition to the home. Fans have finally fixed that.
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Hack brings back a few things that the arcade game had. Things such as the cutscenes that give more of the story, even whole levels and characters are now where they belong. While the colors on screen and sound quality are the same as before Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is now closer to the arcade game.
Sheeva has returned, bosses are playable and there are additional moves added to the Secrets menu. All of this helps bring the Sega Genesis version closer to the arcade port and pull ahead of the Super Nintendo version. For some, this may be the first Sega Genesis game in the Mortal Kombat series to be better than the Super Nintendo port since the original released.
