When we hear about a cool mod or hack it is more often than not simply a character swap or something. Sega’s Streets of Rage 2 is a popular subject of fan mods (we have covered more than a few here). What about the other side of hacks and mods though, the side where the creator REALLY puts some effort into things. One such example of this is the re-imagining of Link’s Awakening using the Nintendo 64 classic Ocarina of Time. The results are quite stunning.
For those few amongst you that do not know, Link’s Awakening was originally released on the Nintendo Game Boy handheld. Originally released on the salad green screen machine then later on the Nintendo Game Boy Color, Link’s Awakening was an amazing title no matter which version you played. I put more time into the original version (it came with a free Game Boy) and enjoyed it quite a lot. My other experience with Zelda games was A Link to the Past (beat it and enjoyed it quite a bit) and Zelda II: Adventures of Link (beat it and enjoyed it). That is about it for me. I have only experienced the Nintendo 64 Legend of Zelda games in a cursory fashion- may need to fix that.
Anyhow, back to the task at hand, the Ocarina of Time engine running a remake of Link’s Awakening. The whole game is here in glorious 3D from Bow Wow the dog to the shops and challenge rooms. This is beyond a simply hack or mod as the attention to detail is simply astounding.
Currently the rom hack is not available publicly so good luck playing this one. We are hoping that this re-imagining of Link’s Awakening using Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64 is eventually released.
