As far as I know, there is one genre that Capcom never took their popular Street Fighter II series of games – kart racing. They have been involved in puzzle games, fighting games of course, and even a crappy live action movie and plenty of anime stuff. Not kart racing for some reason though. Thanks to some fans that have some artistic abilities we can now experience Street Fighter II mashed up with Super Mario Kart in Hyper Street Kart for the Super Nintendo.
You don’t get the full cast of Street Fighter II characters but you do get Blanka, Chun Li, Ken, Ryu, Zangief, M. Bison, Guile and is that Akuma (on second thought, and thanks to Berto in the comments, it probably is Evil Ryu)? The fans behind this hack have even gone so far as to change the names of the cups- Street Cup, Fighter Cup, Hadoken Cup and Turbo Cup. Pretty cute little addition there, at least I thought it was a nice added touch tipping the hat to the Street Fighter II franchise.
The actual racing appears to be quite similar to the original Super Mario Kart stuff. Power ups seem to be changed to be closer to Street Fighter II abilities (such as the fireball of Ken and Ryu). The character faces on the 3D, overhead, map are funny especially whoever is in last place – they appear to be throwing a temper tantrum. A lot of work obviously went into this hack and it shows. Good job guys.
For purists this is not the hack for you. This is obviously a hack for fans of Street Fighter II that want to throw down on the track rather than with fists. You can now do it in Hyper Street Kart.
Grab the rom hack for Hyper Street Kart on ROMHacking.net and enjoy. Sorry but Nintendo still has not succumbed to the pressure to release Super Mario Kart into the public domain so I cannot link to the actual game file. You are on your own there.
If you miss playing the original Super Mario Kart you can grab a copy off of Ebay.

Wow, that’s a cute hack. Btw, I think it’s Evil Ryu, not Akuma.
Oooh, it never donned on me that it could be Evil Ryu. Thanks for bringing him up.
