What would you do if you discovered a strange castle on top of a hill in the distance? If you are Anya, star of Illusion Castle, you would obviously make your way to said mysterious castle and explore. As with most things in life, that is not exactly the best idea you could probably have when faced with this situation. That doesn’t stop Anya though and that is how we got Illusion Castle for Android. The question is, are you ready for another Metroidvania style action game? I hope you have physical controls available because you are going to want them.
Illusion Castle, as already mentioned, is a Metroidvania style game. You control a female warrior (hey that is new-ish) as you explore the unknown castle. Much like Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and the Game Boy Advance follow ups, Illusion Castle plays out in 2D side scrolling action. The graphics are in the pixel art style which I don’t really care for but here they work for the most part. The game has a very Super Nintendo/early Sega Genesis feel to it.
The difficulty level is set to fairly high because there is no map and believe me, you will wish there was one after playing for about an hour or so. The castle is spacious and exploring it is going to require a lot of back tracking as you gain powers on one side of the castle that help do something new on the other side. There are portals that help make these backtracking trips easier but you have to remember where you go when using them. Without a map there is no real way to knowingly do this. Such a shame as that is literally my only gripe with Illusion Castle, no map.
There are In App Purchases and there is advertising, which kind of blocks some of the game screen, in the free version. The ads are not consistent as they do disappear and reappear periodically.
Fans of Castlevania Symphony of the Night will like Illusion Castle. Just be prepared for unnecessary frustration over the areas of the castle being nearly identical and complicating exploration.
