With the announcement that Nintendo is releasing an actual game on Apple’s iPhone it got the gaming world buzzing. Not just any game but a Mario game. A running game at that. Endless running. Personally, I could not care less about endless running games and don’t really care if it features Mario, Sonic, Zelda, my dog, Speedy Gonzalez or whomever. I am able to put aside my bias against the genre when I see something in the auto/endless running genre worth writing up. That something is Super Mario Run 64 by Kaze Emanuar. This is a hack of Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 turning it into an auto runner much like the upcoming iPhone game by Nintendo.
This is one way to remind modern gamers of the classics, it is also a good way to update retrogaming fans on modern genres using the classics. Endless runnners are a new creation that came about due to the limitations of cell phone gaming (for the most part, no buttons to use for controlling direction). These games usually have one control- tap the screen to jump. Newer iterations offer options like jumping, sliding and in the case of 3D into the screen endless runners moving left and right in lanes. Super Mario Run 64 takes those basics and reworks the original Super Mario 64.
While Super Mario Run is strictly a 2D side scrolling endless runner, Super Mario Run 64 is a 2.5D angled side scrolling action game. There are switch backs, multiple enemies and level designs that are pulling from the original Nintendo 64 game. This hack really goes the extra mile to make something enjoyable with the tools and playset pieces that Nintendo made available. The levels are not random though so expect some quality designs that will challenge you with multiple paths and other challenges.
