Batman Forever takes the idea of Mortal Kombat, mixes in brawler style gameplay, and a movie license. Acclaim was known for cashing in on big name properties. Sometimes the releases were okay, rarely good, but mostly bad. For fans of the movie Batman Forever, that own a Sega Genesis or Game Gear, you get this. Both games were released today in 1995. This is what happens when companies jump on the bandwagon – it is not always pretty.
Batman Forever, better forgotten
You can control either Batman or Robin in this side scrolling action adventure title. Enemies run the gamut of weird to even weirder as you punch and kick your way through the levels. This is where things start going downhill for players. See, those fancy digitized graphics can work for a one on one fighting game. There things are slower paced. When you have several thugs coming at you at once it is a different ball game. Those extra frames of animation are killer on your chances of survival.
It is a movie tie-in
Batman Forever tries to follow the storyline, very loosely, of the movie of the same name. The story is doled out in these weird looking “we forced the Batman emblem into everything” scenes between levels. These do help set up where and what you are supposed to do next. Every time it is beat up many of the same looking thugs. Over and over – then scroll a bit and repeat. Not exactly stellar game design but it works. This is a 2D side scrolling action game so what do you expect from the story?
There is always an audience somewhere
Batman Forever is far from perfect but for some fans it may be just what they wanted. If you are still amazed at the quality of the digitized actors in the Mortal Kombat games then you will definitely be interested in Batman Forever. Head over to eBay or Amazon and grab a copy on your favorite hand held or console.
