We have kept quiet after our interview with the Project AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) team. Why? Because Nintendo had delivered a cease and desist to the project we figured it was dead at that point. Instead, development continued on the fan project and little things were fixed here and there and released on torrent sites by the developers. Now, today September 2nd, it is has been made official- Project Another Metroid 2 Remake is dead for good- no more updates. No more development whatsoever. Not even updates to be released on torrent sites.
Nintendo has delivered the final nail in the coffin of this fan project via a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) request. While a cease and desist would suffice in many cases, since the Project AM2R team continued updating the game after receiving a C&D, it is apparent Nintendo felt the need to up the severity of their request. Basically, at this point the Project AM2R team could face serious legal repercussions for continued work on the project (Nintendo has A LOT of money).
Anyhow, the Project AM2R files are still available on torrent sites but don’t expect any bugs that you find to be fixed. Nintendo has made it abundantly clear that this project will not continue. This is sad because it is obvious the team behind this game are HUGE fans of the Metroid series of games.
While it is slim, there is a chance that Nintendo may take the immense popularity of Project AM2R and create a proper remake of Metroid 2 from the Game Boy hand held. Yeah, I know, I said “slim” and I meant it. Nintendo is not known for doing what the fans want, request or show support for- they rather go on their own route and expect fans to adapt as we go.
