I like to keep our friends that speak other languages in the loop of new releases. For instance, Spanish speaking readers may be interested in Scooby Doo Mystery for the Sega Genesis- a game that was previously only available in English. This is a traditional point and click adventure game, now available to Spanish gamers to enjoy.
While there are two games based on this license by Acclaim (the other is on the Super Nintendo and is not a point and click), the Sega Genesis version is more akin to King’s Quest and other Sierra classics. Scooby Doo Mystery has you controlling Shaggy, with Scooby Doo in close proximity at all times, as you attempt to solve the mystery. If you have watched any Scooby Doo cartoons, or even the movies, then you know that the evil creature is usually some bad guy trying to get his way.
The rest of the Scooby Doo gang make brief appearances as you play. Fred, Daphne and Velma all are on hand, usually not to really do much other than remind you that there are other characters than just Shaggy and Scooby Doo. I am not sure why you are not able to control them though- kind of weird.
Scooby Doo Mystery for the Sega Genesis features two scenarios- Blake’s Hotel and Ha Ha Carnival. Both scenarios follow a similar chain of events as the cartoon episodes that featured similar backdrops.
If you are familiar with LucasArts titles like Escape from Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion or Sierra On-Line classics like later King’s Quest titles then the controls of Scooby Doo Mystery will be familiar to you. This is great that Acclaim did not try to re-invent the wheel with their submission to the point and click adventure genre.
The Spanish translation patch file is available at ROMHacking.net, since Scooby Doo Mystery is not freeware, we cannot link directly to the ROM.
