Sega is apparently regaining their wits as they have just announced a brand new 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game. What in the world is going on? While I am not the biggest fan of Sonic the Hedgehog I can say I am impressed with what is shown in this trailer that Sega just released for Sonic Mania 25th Anniversary. Fans should be excited and be prepared to support this effort or shut up bitching about wanting a new 2D game in the series.
The trailer has the classic Sega feel. While not as edgy as the “SEGA!” commercials it does have something going for it that is hard to pinpoint. It is almost like Sega has woken up from a zombie sleep they were in for the last decade and a half, shook off the cobwebs and are starting to regain consciousness. This is ALMOST the Sega that we loved and lost with the death of the Dreamcast.
Sonic Mania 25th Anniversary is planned to release on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC (probably through Steam). It doesn’t take advantage of the power of those platforms. There are no 3D elements to speak of. There is no bonus stage 3D levels that just break up the fun for no good reason. This is apparently straight Sonic the Hedgehog and that is all fans have been clamoring for since we left 2D Sonic in 16-Bit land.
What gamers can expect is slightly better graphics than 16-Bit, smoother animations and more niceties in the world to interact with. Glass breaks, walls crumble and things can fly by like a bat out of hell in Sonic Mania 25th Anniversary. That is classic Sonic. Welcome back old friend.
