I have followed Dragon’s Castle for a while now here on Retro Gaming Magazine. For those that are new to this game, it is a new 2D side scrolling action platform title for the Sega Genesis. Independent developer, Sik, is behind this one- that name should be familiar to a lot of Sega Genesis fans. The animation is all there, more content has been added and more levels are now in the castle.
New things that have been added include health potions, dropping down through platforms to levels below, ability to knock spikes out of the way (though they still hurt to touch) and special effects. Some of the special effects include clouds, water and other slight obstructions that are basically filters but still cool to see on the Genesis.
Action platforming fans will want to check out Dragon’s Castle and follow its development rather closely. There is simply nothing else like this out there being created 100% from scratch, no not a beaver or fedora wearing hero either. This is 100% smooth scrolling in many directions action- not single screen affairs. The cool thing is, you can play it right now as Sik has been releasing ROM’s of regular builds to the public. Did I mention that Dragon’s Castle is also 100% open source so you can get in there and see how things are done for your own project.
Sik is looking for someone to help handle the music in Dragon’s Castle. If you are musically inclined, have experience with the Sega Genesis sound chip and have a bit of free time, maybe hit up the forums and join the project. Sik does have one request though, that the music remain open source to match the game files so that more people can enjoy it.
Head over to the Sega-16.com forums to follow the development and to grab the latest ROM image (legally).
