The Sega Dreamcast is obviously a console that is loved by many gamers. There is a surprising number of those fans that apparently know how to program the defunct Sega console. Take the Visual Memory Unit (VMU) for instance. This was a revolutionary piece of technology that NO console manufacturer has bothered to replicate with newer consoles. That baffles me. It is such a great idea. Street Race VMU just takes things a little further than probably initially planned by Sega.
Look at the work the Elysian Shadows guys are going to make support for the VMU more widespread. It is crazy.
Others are releasing full games for the Sega Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit such as Street Race VMU by Facebook user, Tom Napiorkowski. This is a full on racing game for the VMU. You can download it right now in CDI, SD ISO, straight CD ISO formats and put the game on your memory card and enjoy. That is after finishing this article, of course. 😉
Street Race VMU features six tracks that have varying difficulty levels. Unique grayscale graphics and a toggle to turn off the sound and other audio while playing. There is even a title screen. As the comments say on the Dreamcast Junkyard, Street Race VMU is already ahead of the average Tiger Electronics hand held. Not saying much but well, you get the joke, I am sure.
I know what you are thinking, why bother with a Visual Memory Unit game for the Sega Dreamcast. If you are in this boat, please check out some of the other articles we have made available discussing other Sega Dreamcast games. There are quite a few coming. It is almost like the Dreamcast didn’t get discontinued in 2001. Almost.
Head over to the Dreamcast Junkyard Facebook page to grab your copy of Street Race VMU. While there, let them know that Retro Gaming Magazine referred you and say hi to the rest of the members. They are a bunch of decent people over there.
