Cave Story. A game that has made the rounds quite a bit on modern platforms (my first exposure was on the Sony Playstation Portable). Now, we can start ticking off classic, retro, consoles as this 2D action game is coming to the Sega Genesis. If you don’t know what Cave Story is about then you are in for a treat.
Cave Story was originally created in 2004 for PC’s. It has since then hit the Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Macintosh, Linux, Xbox, GP2X, Sony Playstation Portable and even the Texas Instruments graphing calculator. Whew. That is a lot of platforms for an independently developed title of this scope.
There is a really good story to this one. I won’t spoil it for you but suffice to say, you are playing the good guy and have to battle the evil doctor. No, this is not another Mega Man and that doctor is not named Wiley. I would argue Cave Story gives Capcom’s blue bomber a run for his money in the fun department.
Cave Story is a 2D side scrolling action game that features lots of jumping, powering up, light role playing elements, shooting and more jumping then a bit more shooting. Trust me, you have to play this game on whatever platform is handy for you.
I would love to see this game released on more platforms. This is how it reaches more gamers as not all gamers are fans of all platforms. Imagine if we see a port to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Super Nintendo or even the Turbo Grafx-16 (we all know that console DESERVES more indie game releases).
