When Sega announced they were ending the Sega Dreamcast and going third party a lot of fans had broken hearts.  Some were sad because Sega was throwing in the towel as far as hardware.  Others, like me, were sad because of the plethora of unreleased titles that were due to come out for the Sega Dreamcast.  One such title was Ecco II Sentinels of the Universe.  Now, a prototype has been found and released for all to enjoy.

Hidden Palace has the prototype, in handy self-booting CDI format, and it is free to grab.  Hidden Palace have made an information page available with some basic information on Ecco II Sentinels of the Universe.  Some of that information is that his may be the last build created before all work ended, there is no music or sound effects in this prototype and it works on emulators.

Ecco is one of those titles that was quirky back in the 16-Bit days, was COMPLETELY ignored in the 32-Bit era and for some reason revived in the following generation.  We saw more than a couple of Ecco games on the Sega Genesis, at least one on Sega CD and one on Game Gear (and one on Dreamcast).  It is a little bewildering as to why Sega did not simply port Ecco II Sentinels of the Universe to the Xbox (similar architecture as the Dreamcast) or to the Playstation 2 (or even Gamecube).

I would fill this article with information on the actual story of Ecco II Sentinels of the Future but well, there is nothing really known about it.  Sega never really publicized the game’s story or really much of it.  We do know there are many levels including Atlantis, Galleon and Port 1 and 2, Ancient City and more.
