When you think of Kickstarter games do you think Sega Dreamcast? There have been a few such as Elysian Shadows that has reminded gamers that the Dreamcast is still alive. Xenocider is another title that is looking to keep the dream alive. Retro Sumus are not just pushing the envelope with Xenocider, they are forcing it to its limits. Fans of Space Harrier, Sin and Punishment and Galaxy Force get over to Kickstarter and check this title out. Seriously. There is a demo available right now on your Windows PC, Macintosh, Linux box and of course, your Sega Dreamcast (three versions of the disc image available).
In my previous article from March of this year, I mentioned that there are no official software being used here. I have been assured by Retro Sumus that that has not changed, and will not change as Xenocider progresses. What you are seeing is programming that is at quite a high level of quality by a homebrew developer. Why am I pointing that out? Just look at the level of quality they have achieved so far for a good reason.
Keep in mind, development of Xenocider is being done on Ubuntu 16.04 then ported to the other platforms. Chances are, if you have a powerful Linux rig, this is going to your “show off” game for friends and family. For many reading this, knowing this is Linux first probably means very little. For the rest of you, you know what this means and are probably excited.
In the final version of Xenocider Retro Sumus plans to include:
10 levels plus 2 extra levels, based on stretch goals
Upgradeable skills
Customizable controls
3 game modes (story, arcade and boss rush) plus 1 extra mode if stretch goals are met
Unlockable content
3 difficulty levels
Plus much more
Dreamcast exclusives include – 480p video resolution, arcade stick, mouse and keyboard and Twin Stick controller support.
You better hurry though, rewards are going fast as support for Xenocider grows. Head over to Kickstarter and pledge your support ASAP. Retro Sumus are running this campaign for 30 days but don’t wait till the last minute to secure your copy of Xenocider.
