There has been quite a bit of interest in the “alternate” gender of Link that was pointed out in the art book, Hyrule Warriors. It seems that Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma has even hinted that a female version of Link could be playable at some point in the future. That is all fine and dandy but for now, we have fans that are hacking a gender neutral Link into the classic games. The fans do what Nintendo won’t.
This is not a total conversion hack, this is not a “change the map” hack either. This hack of Legend of Zelda – A Link to the Past, for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, is more of a text hack. Nintendo left the door kind of open for this since Link in Zelda III is not exactly masculine- nothing like a wrestler anyhow. That makes the work of Tony Smith, who created this hack for his daughter, even easier. Not having to hack graphic sprites probably saved a lot of time.
Mr. Smith simply made this hack for his daughter to be able to enjoy one of the best 2D Zelda games better. Girl gamers are a demographic that is continuously “ignored” by game publishers and developers due to their ranks being so miniscule in comparison to the opposite sex. Sure, there are surveys and the like that state otherwise- the true survey that matters is game sales. Sales of games that are specifically made for girls are not nearly as well received as other titles that seemingly have a male audience in mind. I know, there could be a lot of girl gamers that are fine playing a guy in the latest Grand Theft Auto, beating up hookers and stealing cars.
Anyhow, Legend of Zelda – A Link to the Past: Gender Neutral Edition is available now over on ROMHacking.net, I can’t link to the ROM but the patch is fair game.
