Bonk. The redheaded stepchild of gaming mascots was never quite able to gain traction. Bonk’s popularity was good enough for NEC/TTI/Hudson to release several titles based on him. We got a shooter (Zonk) and several platformers in the Bonk universe. After the demise of the Turbo Grafx-16, Hudson kept Bonk alive releasing titles for the Nintendo NES, Super Nintendo and the Game Boy. I am not sure why a Sega Genesis Bonk was never released, maybe it was the poor connection between the companies? More recently, there was to be a reboot of the Bonk games but it was abruptly canceled. Now we know more information on that canceled title.
Originally planned for release on WiiWare, Xbox Live and the Playstation Network, Bonk: Brink of Extinction was to be a 2.5D style action title. For those that are not familiar with 2.5D games, they are simply 3D games that are locked in a 2D, side scrolling view, giving the appearance of a “classic title. Bonk: Brink of Extinction was to be that, complete with the sweeping camera angles at key moments.
Along with a nod to Bonk 3 in a new two player mode, there were plans for old enemies to return. It is clear that this was a love letter to retro gaming and the fans of this genre. Too bad it was canceled- we might have been playing the third or even fourth game in the series by now.
From the new gameplay video we can see that Bonk: Brink of Extinction was quite a bit into development before being dropped. We also find out that Bonk was planned to be able to take on powers in game, similar to Mega Man or Kid Chameleon. Basically, this was on track to be at least a really interesting reboot for the series. Too bad it was dropped prior to completion.
There are plenty of Bonk games on many platforms. Ebay has a lot of them, your purchase directly helps RGM via affiliate marketing.
