Mega Man Redux Visually Improves Upon Original NES Classic

Capcom did a remake of the first Mega Man on Playstation Portable back in 2006.  Fans have decided to do a remake of their own.  Graphically improving the original Mega Man on the Nintendo Entertainment System, this hack almost breathes new life into a classic.  Similar to what was done for Super Mario Bros in “Modern Edition”, only the graphics have been improved upon.  For me, this is quite interesting and I like it- I hope we see more.

While not as graphically impressive as what Capcom did on the Playstation Portable, Mega Man Redux is still cool.  Mega Man himself looks more like a “chibi” version of an adult.  Details have been added to the backgrounds and the enemies that you face.  Things just look a bit more impressive now, not that he original was shabby or anything.  You have to remember this is still an 8-Bit Nintendo NES powering this game so it is not going to improve to look like an SNES game.

The gameplay for Mega Man Redux holds true to the original game with little to no modifications made.  This is great for purists that just want a slightly better looking package to run through.  Besides, level hacks, new enemies, etc are best left for full on game mods rather than simply a face lift like Redux offers.

In the video I play through a bit of Cutman’s level, just to show off the graphical improvements.  While impressive, true purist fans may be put off by the graphical improvements (not sure why though).  It is not for everyone.

Capcom has been one of those companies that has kept their back catalog alive with improvements and re-releases.  I wish Sega would take a look at what Capcom is doing and do something similar to their franchises.  Maybe then Sega would see a significant uptick in sales.  Imagine getting an improved Streets of Rage set, even if it was just the graphics that were improved.  I would buy it.

Always cool to see the community adding in their killer ideas/efforts. Love the modding community.

A few people on N4G.com are not liking the “improvement” but that is the great thing about gaming. We don’t all have to agree to enjoy them.

I have a few more mods like this to cover- just have to find time to do them.

For sure, people are free to dislike de hack, it is normal. It’s just not intended to every one: some nostalgic fans would turn their faces, but that’s was expected. The hack is just nothing more than an imaginative exercise bring to life: “how would look the game with a different choice in graphics?” If the result is good or not depends on taste (and for me it has its pros and cons). Still the modification may be interesting to anyone who has played many times the original and want to feel something different when playing the game. And thats the reason for the hack ‘s title be ” ReduX ” and not “improvement” or “atualizaion” and anything like that. Like any other modificaton, it’s just intended to people who likes it =)

With anything, there are going to be people that don’t like it. Me personally, I like it. That is why I wrote it up here- to share it with others, both fans and not.

I especially drool over the graphically extensive/demanding mods of today’s games….
I am still waiting on a game to offer up the ability to utilize as much RAM as there is available to truly in a sense “cache” itself. Much closer to the CPU and muuuuuch faster than any storage medium available today.
I dream of the day a completely unified system is readily available and widely adopted. Something like NV-Link as the standard maybe.

I have seen mods to add more RAM to platforms as far back as the Dreamcast but they, unfortunately, have side effects with certain games. Such a shame as it would surely speed up, at least, loading times and the like.
