Blizzard are an enigma in gaming. When other companies are abandoning their previous releases each year, Blizzard is just getting started. Take Diablo II for example. This is a 16 year old game- Blizzard are definitely not making money off of gamers that bought it back then. The last official patch released for Diablo II was 1.13d in 2011- five years ago. Recently, patch 1.14 was released, nearly two decades after Diablo II was originally released.
A quote from Blizzard reads, “This update focuses on system glitches introduced by modern operating systems. In related news, you can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX.”
Yeah, Blizzard have patched Diablo II to work with modern computers. How cool is that? That would be like Electronic Arts patching American McGee’s Alice or the original Sims game to run better on modern hardware. This is one reason why Blizzard is so cool.
We’ve also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities. There’s still work to be done, but we’re making improvements every day. Another quote from Blizzard about their continued efforts to improve Diablo II. Again, what other companies do this?
Lastly, There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us. This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there. See you in Sanctuary, adventurers.
This is further proof that if fans support cool companies they will show support back. At least the cool ones will. Thank you Blizzard, from the staff of Retro Gaming Magazine and from your hardcore fans around the globe.
