While Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death is scheduled to be the only release from CollectorVision for the Coleco Chameleon, it is destined for two retro platforms also. Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death is also coming to the original ColecoVision console and the MSX computer, also thanks to CollectorVision. Below we have a preview video of it in action. Action adventure fans will feel right at home with Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death on ColecoVision.
2D side scrolling adventuring is the name of the game in Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death. You will face bats, ghosts, hot lava and more obstacles than you can shake a lit torch at in these caves. At least that is the plan so far, according to Jean-Francois Dupuis, owner of CollectorVision. There is a RetroWorks logo in the beginning of the video, not sure who that is. I will be asking CollectorVisions public relations agent, John Lester (Gamester81 on Youtube) about this and follow up with that information.
Edit- RetroWorks are indeed the developer for the ColecoVision and MSX versions of Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death.
Check out the video for an idea of what to expect from this ColecoVision title. Based on the video, I can say it is rather interesting use of shading to get around the color/pixel limit of the ColecoVision console. Similar to how Konami played with shading on Nightshade for the Nintendo Entertainment System to achieve a perceived increased atmosphere. It is just as cool of an effect in Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death.
Interestingly, there apparently will be an intro sequence that sets up Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death. This is something that was not often used back in the day due to concerns over costs of ROM chips.
Now if CollectorVision can match these graphics with a smooth challenge level and varied screens of challenges they will have a hit on their hands.
Follow the development of the ColecoVision and MSX versions specifically on the AtariAge forums. CollectorVision’s website is available here so you can check out the other titles they are working on.
