Bandit Gaming- Penguin Adventure Prepares Soft Launch on ColecoVision thanks to Homebrew Developers

For those that do not know, the original Penguin Adventure for the Japanese MSX computer is the first title Hideo Kojima worked.  Penguin Adventure is a 3D running game, think early Temple Run, which came out on the MSX computer, Playstation, Sega Saturn, mobile phones, PC and Virtual Console all in Japan.  We pretty much missed out on this one in the United States.  This is another Bandit Gaming article since as far as I know, Konami is not endorsing this port to the ColecoVision console.

The ColecoVision port of Penguin Adventure is being handled by homebrew developer, Opcode, over on AtariAge’s forums.  There is an overhead map, pseudo 3D into the screen scrolling and colorful graphics.  You have to avoid the obstacles as they scroll into view.  These obstacles include holes with fish jumping up that you must collect.

Unlike Temple Run and similar endless runners, Penguin Adventure does not go on endlessly.  There is a definite end to the levels, you just have to make it there.  There are power ups available to aid you but get ready to be price gauged in the shop- par for the course in gaming.

Some changes that are being made by Opcode over the original include how continues are handled.  Now, they are on by default, no longer requiring you to use a password.  There is also a new ending when you beat all 24 levels.  Easy mode also gives you five lives to work with while the original MSX game only gave you three.  While these seem like small changes they are still improvements on the original.

According to Opcode on the AtariAge forums, Penguin Adventure is actually eight times bigger than the previous game- Antarctic Adventure.  Quite a feat.

This port makes use of the Super Game Cartridge for ColecoVision.  To follow the past updates hit the AtariAge forums.
