It is not every day that I get to write about a new game being released, well it happens often but not THAT often. Then add up the fact that we see only a few forgotten titles finally released and it becomes even rarer. Lupo Albtero is one such title for the Atari ST. A forgotten title that is seeing the light of day thanks to Luca Stradiotto who did design work, music and handled graphics requirements on this title. This was 25 years ago, folks. Lupo Alberto is based on an Italian comic book of the same name.
Lupo Alberto did see release on the Commodore Amiga and Commodore 64 computers. For some reason the Atari ST version was simply not released and has been forgotten all of this time.
Lupo Alberto is a 2D side scrolling action platform title that has been compared to Super Mario Bros by Nintendo. There are enemies to avoid, items to collect (fruit instead of coins) and of course lots of jumping action to handle. Enemies seemingly take two jumps on their heads to get rid of them though. The first time you jump on them they fall down and hang on the ledge. The second jump on their heads removes them from the screen leaving fruit for you to collect for points. It is all very “family friendly” as there is no animation detailing the damage being inflicted (such as the turtles disappearing into their shells in SMB).
There is a big difference, there appears to be no scrolling. When you reach the edge of the screen, at any of the four edges, it jumps to the next screen. Kind of jarring but you get used to it.
Lupo Alberto hit the C64 in 1990 and the Commodore Amiga in 1991. Head over to the AtariAge forums and you can download the freely available Atari ST version.

Interesting! I suspect they went flip-screen due to the basic ST’s (usually) awful horizontal scrolling. Nice to see the old beast still getting new games released!
One of these days I really need to work out how to make disk images so I can check this out on Steam…
