You read that title right. Mega Man 2 is being ported to the Sega Master System by fans. Anyone that was around during the 16-Bit days will remember that Mega Man never saw a release, at least officially, on a Sega console till we got to the Saturn (which means, it was a long time). We did see Mega Man: The Wiley Wars on the Sega Channel for Sega Genesis but that never saw an official, cartridge release (though pirates have created one). I am not counting that since there were so few people that had access to the Sega Channel- it may as well not have been released. A Brazilian fan has taken the challenge up and is working on porting Mega Man 2 to the Sega Master System. The progress he has made so far is quite staggering really.
Right now, as of this writing, Mega Man 2 for the Sega Master System is sitting at version 3.0 and work continues. What is represented in version 3.0 is all eight levels from the game, opening music track, menus and for the Bubbleman stage. While you may be thinking, that is not a lot of stuff that is damn near the whole game. Sure the enemies are not implemented yet, you can still walk through the levels unimpeded- great for those that want to practice their jumps.
While not perfect, this unofficial port is progressing nicely. Fans will enjoy being able to play Mega Man 2 on the Sega Master System and pirates will have another title to put on a cart and “charge just for material and time” to do it. This makes me wish Capcom and Sega had come to an agreement and gotten Mega Man officially on Sega’s 8-bit and 16-bit hardware back in the day. While not a game changer, it would have certainly helped Sega further their cause in the eyes of gamers.
