Square Enix have released the second Tomb Raider game onto Android and iOS devices. The control scheme is almost exactly as it was in the original release from April of this year so if you hated it there, well, it isn’t better here. Tomb Raider II is one of the more interesting 3D action titles that we saw come out of the 32-bit era, not only because it was one of the few titles released around that time that featured a female protagonist prominently. Square Enix has given those that have the capability the choice to pair a blue tooth controller and use that instead of the onscreen controls, kind of cool of them. Oh, and there is more than just Tomb Raider II in this package.
Square Enix has saw fit to add the formerly PC exclusive Gold levels. The Gold expansion was four additional, self-contained, levels that featured their own storyline and objectives. The Gold expansion didn’t affect the rest of the game so it was kind of throw away content, cool if you wanted to play more Tomb Raider II but not necessary to enjoy the game. For what it is worth, that content is now available in the iOS and Android version that you can grab for a buck or two bucks.
For some reason, Tomb Raider II is a buck on Google Play and $1.99 on iTunes. There is no explanation for that price difference either.
What is here is Tomb Raider II with improved textures (screen comparison is available here in this article). As you can see, this is not just a simple Playstation emulator with a controller overlay running the PSOne disc in the background. No, Square Enix actually put some work into this port, a welcome addition that more companies need to look into when porting their titles to newer platforms. Do some housecleaning folks!
