You knew it was bound to happen. Someone has recreated the classic Game Boy Advance version of Super Mario Brothers 3 in Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo Wii U. This is one of those times that the fans are saving the copyright owner some trouble, while giving back to the community. The levels that are being recreated are levels that would have required additional investment by fans back in the day via the e-Reader attachment, then the cards themselves (and time to swipe each card). Killing more than one bird with one stone here.
For those that don’t know, the e-Reader was an attachment for the Game Boy Advance that allowed players to swipe cards, much like you would a credit card, through the slot. Combine the right cards in the right order and you would be rewarded with items in certain games (clearly designated so there was no confusion) or even whole new levels, as the case was with Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3. According to our friends over at Retrocollect, you could unlock a ton of items in Animal Crossing for the Nintendo Gamecube by hooking up a GBA, an e-Reader and swiping the Animal Crossing cards. Cool concept, and interesting way to get more money out of gamers before the days of “in app purchases”.
There are more than a few of the e-Reader levels available so far. Retrocollect has most of them listed for those interested in playing them on their Wii U.
