Man, the guys over on the Atari Age forums sure do keep themselves busy with creating new and improved versions of classic games. Specifically classics on the Atari 2600 that didn’t exactly receive a stellar port in the first place. Previously I looked at another improved port in the form of Pac-Man 8K Edition, also by DINTAR816. This time though it is all about the classic Nintendo game, Mario Bros- an arcade port that was in the same boat as Pac-Man as far as quality goes. DINTAR816’s version is much better, even though it is not even finished, you can see it is going to rock.
Graphically things in this update are based on the Nintendo Entertainment System version, rather than going for a straight arcade port. This could be good or bad news depending on what side of the fence you fall on in regards to arcade ports. There is little chance that there will ever be a 100% dead on port of the arcade game to the Atari 2600 so a port closer to the NES version is better than the original in many ways.
Mario in this improved version is more defined and “Mario-looking”, more in line with what we know him from in the NES version. Also, the turtle enemy is more detailed than before. Overall, things are progressing nicely in this updated version.
The original Mario Bros has been an early title that Nintendo has kept alive in various ways. There have been standalone ports for the Atari 2600 and other first generation consoles and also the Nintendo NES. In certain Nintendo titles you could access a port of Mario Bros as an added bonus. Nintendo has certainly kept this one alive, even though a new port, improvement or otherwise has not surfaced in a long time. Nintendo, get on that.
