Street Fighter II was the one game that sealed the success of the Super Nintendo in the early 90’s. Sega simply had nothing to compete with it other than pitiful attempts that are best not mentioned in the same breath. Capcom knew they had a gold mine on their hands based on the success of the arcade machine, there was very little reason to not believe this would carry over to the home version. It did, and it continues today with Street Fighter V being a console exclusive just like Street Fighter II was. Street Fighter II got around in the gaming world, it hit the SNES, Genesis, PC-Engine (Turbo Grafx-16 here in the states) and then in compilations on consoles after that. Including the Virtual Boy (unofficially), soon we will add the Atari 2600 as a platform to receive an, unofficial, port of Street Fighter II.
Right off the bat you know this is not going to be perfect but so far, Street Fight World is pretty damn awesome looking. Sure, it is on the Atari 2600 and it looks like crap when compared to any other port, even the Virtual Boy, but that is to be expected. We are talking about a console that is going on 40 years old here. The idea of the levels and characters are there and that is what matters the most in these types of ports- the idea.
Moves are limited, like the graphics and sound, due to only one action button on the controller (fireballs and Dragon Punches are performed the same though). I doubt we will see support for the Sega Genesis six button pad on this one though so don’t get too excited.
Right now, work is continuing on the port. Improvements are coming at a fairly rapid pace as the developer is working hard on this game. He is researching other programming languages for other systems such as BasiEgaXorz for the Sega Genesis so we may see a port of Street Fight World in the future.
