You read that headline right, Mortal Kombat X is no longer coming to the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 (Nintendo Wii owners welcome their fellow gamers). It seems that Mortal Kombat X on the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 just didn’t measure up to the quality of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One versions, as stated by a community manager for Warner Brothers Games. Sounds suspicious to me.
First of all, why couldn’t it meet the quality standards of the current generation hardware? Sure, graphically there is going to be a hit there but, seriously? Is it going to be that bad that they lost all interest in releasing the game on the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3? It is obvious to even the newest gamer that the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 are going to have better graphics versus the previous hardware. I seriously doubt this is the reason that Mortal Kombat X was cancelled on last generation hardware.
Maybe it was a case of WB Games not selling all that well on the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3? This could be a serious reason as to why they cancelled Mortal Kombat X on those consoles. Maybe WB Games pulled a Sega who cancelled Toy Commander and Sierra who cancelled Half-Life on the Sega Dreamcast- tax write offs.
If they go ahead and release Mortal Kombat X on the last generation of hardware and it doesn’t sell enough to at least recoup development costs then the difference is on the financial report as a loss. By cancelling Mortal Kombat X on the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 WB Games can not only stop dropping money on the development, they can recoup what they have invested already- all nice and tidy at tax time.
The probability of it being a tax write off for WB Games being the main reason they pulled the plug on Mortal Kombat X is quite probable. It is sad that last generation gamers won’t get to enjoy Mortal Kombat X but at the end of the day, the all mighty dollar rules.

Guess they should have made it on Unreal engine 4 then. What a waste.
It appears that developers have lost the fine art of “optimization”. Such a shame.
