This is a unique news item, one that is pretty interesting for me as I figured the original was to be the start of something pretty cool. Sadly, we only ever saw one Mutant League Football game and one hockey title in this style before the series was pretty much dropped by Electronic Arts. During the 16-Bit wars, exclusives were key, sure Sega, Nintendo and NEC all had their “house” franchises, there were certain companies that produced games on at least two of the more popular platforms of the day. Electronic Arts was, and still is, one of the biggest 3rd party companies out there- during the 16-Bit days they held a lot of clout. When we saw Mutant League Football release, it was pretty much guaranteed that it would not be on the Super Nintendo (this was before the whole ‘Play it Loud’ because we saw Mortal Kombat sales drag the bottom of the financial barrel campaign). Now, that classic football game is being re-imagined for the Playstation 4, Xbox One and mobile platforms- iOS and Android.
This is not just any re-imagining, no, the original creator/lead designer, Michael Mendheim, is heading this new version for Digital Dreams Entertainmnent LLC. This new version of the classic Mutant League Football will feature online multiplayer for up to four players (no word as of yet if that will be cross platform or not).
Mutant Football League will be shown at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo, aka PAX Prime, at the Washington State Convention Center. PAX Prime will be available between August 28th and August 31st. Digital Dreams Entertainment will be located in booth #6813. Show attendees will be able to see a pre-alpha version of the game being demonstrated by Michael Mendheim himself.
