The Colecovision was a platform that was one of the unfortunate fatalities that occurred due to the 1983/1984 video game crash. The console, up to this point and for a while afterwards, was doing quite well but things dropped off considerably as we neared 1985- to the point that Coleco, the parent company of the Colecovision, withdrew official support for the console in October 1985. Now, going on 30 years later, homebrew developers are resurrecting the console with new games. One such new game is Cave- a 3D ASCII graphics Rogue-like adventure.
If you think console wars are tough today, you should do some research into the history of video games. Back in the day companies were releasing adapters to play their competitors games. That would be like Microsoft officially releasing an emulator or something to play PSOne, Playstation 2 and Playstation Portable games on the Xbox One. Sony would go apeshit. I am sure companies like Atari did too back in the early to mid 80’s when Atari 2600 adapters starting appearing for their competition.
The game Cave is a first attempt by Atari Age forum member, “FredTheFred”. The dungeons are randomly generated along with the enemies, treasure and other items also randomly placed. Just like the classic Rogue game, and newer iterations of it such as Diablo, this makes for a new game every time you play. For some, that is an interesting proposition and one they simply have to partake in, for others it is a sign of bad game design. That is up to you.
If you are interested in grabbing a copy of Cave for your Colecovision, you are going to have to wait as “FredTheFred” has not released a game file. Also, there is currently no information on a possible cartridge release.
