You read that slightly confusing headline right- Piko Interactive have just released the first three new titles in a planned nine new game set. It is not that often that we see a single homebrew game released for a defunct console such as the Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis. That is why we are doing our best to keep the work of Piko Interactive front and center with our readers. The team at Piko Interactive are working hard on bringing out a ton of new games, either full on homebrew titles or cleaning up unfinished unreleased, but licensed for commercial retail, titles that we may have never seen otherwise. These guys put in the effort to do better than the everyday homebrew developer by going after titles that were to be commercial releases, but for some reason weren’t finished. This is true for all three of the titles we are going to discuss here- they were started around two decades ago but finished recently by the Piko Interactive team.
First up is a brawler that we covered here called Water Margin for the Sega Genesis. In China Water Margin is known as Shui Hu: Feng Yun Zhuan (tongue twister even saying it in my head). Piko Interactive have removed all of the Chinese text and localized the whole game for English speaking gamers. This is similar to what the team at Super Fighter Team do. Streets of Rage fans will do themselves a favor by at least checking Water Margin out. Grab your copy of Water Margin off the Piko Interactive store.
Another title that we have covered in the past is Dorke & Ymp for the Super Nintendo. This one has taken a little longer to fix up as there was unfinished code, new levels and boss fights to insert and general bug squashing. Dorke & Ymp is an action platform title that would have been the talk of the gaming publications back in the early to mid-90’s had its original developer been able to find a publisher. Grab Dorke and Ymp off the Piko Interactive store.
Corn Buster for the Super Nintendo is a new title for us to be covering. Corn Buster could be thought of as “battle pinball” in the vein of Devilish on the Game Gear and Sega Genesis. You control two paddles at different heights on the screen and must keep the metal ball in play as you advance through the levels. There are baddies, obstacles and more to contend with so don’t let your guard down. Grab Corn Buster off the Piko Interactive store.
There you go, three of the nine planned new Piko Interactive titles. Which one is on your holiday wishlist?
