Ah, the brawler, a series that has gotten a bad rap in gaming for being shallow, not much fun and generally generic. I wonder what has taken this once popular genre out of the limelight. A lot of gamers will point their fingers at the popularity of the one on one fighting game genre- rebuilt and still led by the Street Fighter franchise. No matter the reason, brawlers are still popular with fans, even if they are not popular with game developers and publishers. For proof of this just look at the game we are talking about here- Final Fantasy VII, re-imagined as a brawler similar to the good old fashioned ones of yesteryear.
Created by a dedicated batch of fans collectively known as PD Design Studio, Final Fantasy VII Re-Imagined is pretty damn polished. Just look at the video below for a taste of what they have created here.
Right now there is only Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockheart available in the PLAYABLE demo that is available (grab that while you can, folks). When games cross genres like this there is usually something left out from the original. I am sure that Final Fantasy VII Re-Imagined is no different, we will probably not see turn based battles, battle timers or having to stand in one place or picking attacks from a menu and just standing there taking hit after hit after hit from super powerful opponents (end sarcasm).
The team behind this project have apparently stated that this project is nearly complete. Right now the only thing we have is a short video and the online only demo (using the Unity Engine) to go by. I wonder how long before Square Enix throws this in front of the bus since they just announced their remake of Final Fantasy VII at E3 this year (to great fanfare).
