Shenmue Gaiden is a Digital Comic of Love by Fans

In our second issue of RGM we featured several “digital comics”, think Snatcher and you will have a good idea of what they are.  The reason I bring that up in this article is because there is a new Shenmue digital comic developed by two fans.  Shenmue Gaiden is not a canon title but a side story (Gaiden is, loosely, Japanese for “side story”).  The story is told through static images sometimes with animation and video clips while you traverse the game world through selecting menu options that become available based on what you are doing.  The style is pretty simple but can be quite engrossing if done right (not many have used this right).  Remember, this is a fan game, not an official title to be confused with the recent Kickstarter success.

According to the official development post on the Shenmue Dojo forums, the story of Shenmue Gaiden is set just before Ryo reaches Shenhua’s home in Guilin.  That is story number one, there are two planned.  Story number two is based in Hong Kong focusing on Dou Niu and Yuan who are looking for revenge after their defeat at the hands of Ryo and friends.

Character models are being all redone and will feature lighting effects based on time of day in the scene.  These won’t be static models either, they will move and feature facial expressions, mouth words etc, based on who is talking and show emotions.  Backgrounds are planned to be 1080×720 and support widescreen formats. Shenmue_Gaiden_Visial_Digital_Graphic_Novel_Adventure_bandit_gaming (1)

Interestingly, at the end of each game day you will return to Shenhua’s home where you sleep and rest.  Before ending the day though, you will go through a discussion of the events of the day along with general life.  This is also where you will learn about the gameplay mechanics that you will encounter in Shenmue Gaiden.

Who is excited in this fan release?  A demo is planned for later this year with the game set for a 2016 release.
