Back in the day games had very limited graphics and sound capabilities. Developers had to work to get gamers drawn into the game world they created. Work hard. Take a game like Saboteur 2, in its original form it was a good game but could have been better. Of the many platforms Saboteur 2 hit back in 1987, the ZX Spectrum is the one that is the subject of a remake of sorts. An upgrade would be more accurate as this is an improvement on the original. Created by Clive Townsend and released through Durell Software, Saboteur 2 is getting a 128k version by Alex Rider, a Russian programmer and apparently a big fan of both the ZX Spectrum and Saboteur 2.
In Saboteur 2 you take control of a female character named “Ninja” who happens to be the sister of “Ninja” from the first game who died. This time, you are infiltrating an evil dictator’s high-security stronghold (is there any other kind?). This is not your normal, A-Team style evil dictator, no this one had the foresight to build on top of a catacomb of tunnels and caves. As you can already guess, your mission is not going to be easy but well, someone has to do it and you are the one nominated for the job.
According to our friends over at Indie Retro News, the 128k upgrade of Saboteur 2 will feature a faster frame rate, some bug fixes and much more. Interestingly, Sabotuer 2 is an early adopter of “girl power” by placing a female in the lead. This was around the same time that Nintendo was doing something similar with, but keeping it secret till you beat, Metroid on the Nintendo Entertainment System. See, Nintendo was not the only company supporting women kicking ass in games, they were just a little more secretive about it than others.
Saboteur 2’s trek to 128k is a work in progress. While there is a download of various builds available on the ZX-PK.ru forum site, they are beta’s at best.
