Ah, Ghouls n Ghosts sits alone in that style of game for the Sega Genesis, Mega Drive everywhere outside of North America. That is not stopping developer Locomalito from bringing his, wholly, original title, Maldita Castilla to the Sega Genesis. Maldita Castilla is already available for Windows computers and is freeware (review coming soon). This article is for the Sega Genesis port though and that is where we will focus as much as possible, obviously references to the PC version will be here.
First, the preview build of Maldita Castilla is just that, a preview. There are no enemies to worry about, there isn’t even any collision detection in this build. All that is available is part of one level that shows off the parallax scrolling, animation on your character and some ruins (and eventually some hills to climb). That is it. For proof, check out our video of it in action using the Fusion Sega Genesis emulator.
Maldita Castilla on the PC though is quite a homage to the classic Capcom titles, Ghosts n Goblins and Ghouls n Ghosts. The storyline is different and there are enough other differences to make Maldita Castilla its own title. There is also a bit more platforming going on here than in Capcoms gaming take on medieval times. That is welcome though as it breaks up the constant barrage of enemies and keeps the challenge level high but interesting.
As stated on the Locomalito site, “I’ve missed games like Ghost’n’Golbins for many years, so I just decided to make one by myself” You have to respect people that see a problem in gaming and decide to fix it themselves rather than complain.
Locomalito has created many titles over the years that pay homage to classics. From 2D shooters like Hydorah (Gradius, Life Force, etc) or other classic titles, Locomalito probably has something available for you to enjoy, all for free.
