Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict Brings Arena Style 3D Shooting to Xbox – Today in History – April 18th, 2005

The original Xbox was not exactly the barn burning success that Microsoft had hoped it would be.  That did not stop plenty of exclusive games, most First Person Shooters (FPS), from appearing on the console.  One such console exclusive was Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict by Midway and Epic Games.  This game is even backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 so fans, or those interested in this style of game in general, can still play it- though your mileage may vary.

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict features quite a bit of combat, if you can rustle up the necessary competition online.  Featuring 14 characters that come directly from the Unreal universe, The Liandri Conflict also offers a couple of new characters, new weapons never before seen in previous games and new attacks.  Don’t let that “Online Enabled” tag on the box scare you away, there is also a single player mode that features many mainstays of today’s gaming.

Single players can take on story specific mission within the game (complete with story rich cut scenes) and compete in various tournament ladders (unique to each character).  Interestingly, or not so much considering this is Midway, there are Mortal Kombat style fatalities that can be performed on opponents/enemies in The Liandri Conflict.  While you probably won’t see the over the top graphicness of Mortal Kombat X you will still get the idea, that enemy is not getting up anytime soon (at least not till the next respawn point).Unreal_Championship_Liandri_Conflict_Xbox_Midway_Games_Epic_retro_April_18_2005_FPS_Shooter (2)

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict was built from the ground up with the original Xbox hardware in mind.  This makes it a rather nice showcase title for those wanting to show off a bit of the graphic power of this hardware (it is still great hardware, if only Microsoft would open it up to the homebrew/indie communities).

It has been 10 years since we saw Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict release.  If you have the game and the hardware, why not fire it up and enjoy a round or two?  For those that don’t have the game, why not check out the handy (site supporting) links below:
