Super Mario Brothers never made it to the Commodore 64, though Hudson Soft did license the series for IBM PC computers. That might be why Nintendo stopped allowing their games onto other platforms, till the CD-i debacle with Zelda and Mario. That has not stopped other publishers from doing games that are quite similar to Nintendo’s bread and butter. Take Sam’s Journey from Knights of Bytes, a new action platform title that was announced right before April 1st (a popular date for jokes and prank articles). That is why I waited so long to write something on it, waiting for the inevitable “it was just a joke” update from the developer. That never came so it must be real. Fans of the classic action platform game will want to follow Sam’s Journey with us.
Knights of Bytes claim that Sam’s Journey is following in the steps of similar games on the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Master System. No specific titles were mentioned but judging by the screen shots it is obvious that they are meaning titles such as Super Mario Bros. Nothing wrong with shooting for the gold when you are creating your game, that is how great games are created- they certainly are not created by aiming for mediocrity.
Staples of the genre are already in place including jumping on enemies heads to eliminate them, collecting items and jumping on platforms. What is not par for the course is the level of detail and the speed of scrolling of the screen, which led me to believe this was a fake pre-April Fool’s announcement.
I will be following Sam’s Journey through development because it is a really interesting title and unique to the C64, which has been inundated with scrolling SUECK shooters as of late. We need more games like this- for them to be made, we as fans need to support those making them.
