Rogue Style Role Playing Game Powder Ported to Sega Dreamcast

Powder is a Rogue-like role playing game for those that don’t know.  “Rogue” games are all about the randomness, the not knowing what to expect around the corner or just off in the darkness.  Powder captures that randomness quite well in the recently released Sega Dreamcast port.  Powder uses KollistiOS and not the normal Sega Dreamcast software development kit.

For me, I did not learn about Rogue the game or the genre itself till well into my life of playing games.  My first exposure to this type of game was with Sword of Fargoal on the Commodore 64 (and in recent years, ported to iOS but not Android).  The idea of adventuring through dungeons that change every time you play is just too alluring for gamers like me to ignore.  The challenge in Rogue style games is slightly higher versus traditional role playing games.

Powder has you taking on the regulars that you would expect to see in a dungeon crawler.  Skeletons, snakes, rats, spiders, etc all make an appearance in Powder.  The view is from an overhead angle which is the norm for Rogue-like games, honestly it is probably the best angle too.

When you start in the dungeon of Powder you only see a little bit, your surroundings and that is about it.  You don’t start out seeing the whole dungeon, you have to explore to see what is around the corner or down that hallway.  Usually a monster is waiting for you, a hungry deadly monster.Powder_Rogue_Diablo_homebrew_Sega_Dreamcast_retro_retrogaming_videogame (1)

Powder has been also ported to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance where it has very little competition.  There are not a lot of Rogue-like style games available on consoles, a few but not many.  Diablo is one of the more popular Rogue-like style games available but that only hit the PSOne console in the late 90’s.

Powder has been ported to Wii, PS3 Linux, Linux, Windows CE, PSP, Mac, GBA, Nintendo DS and Windows just to name a few platforms.
