Ultima IV- Quest of the Avatar Remastered and Released for Commodore 64

How many role playing games have you played that required you to overcome some massively evil entity that is bent on destroying the world?  Too many, right?  Well, back in the early days of computer gaming there was a game called Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar.  It was, obviously, the fourth title in the Ultima series but it was, probably, the first role playing game to not require you to overcome some great evil entity.  No, in Ultima IV you are tasked with overcoming your own being, overcoming your own shortcomings and ascending to Avatar.  The Avatar is THE example of good that others in the world would model their lives after- a guiding example of what is right.

That is quite a change for a role playing game, then or now.  For it to have occurred so early in gaming is a testament to the direction that some designers were interested in going, sadly the industry did not follow.

What Ultima IV Remastered means is that the graphics and overall game have been improved.  This remastered version is for the Commodore 64 and it looks amazing compared to the original releases from so many years ago.  Just look at the comparison picture below for proof of that.

There has been a lot of work that went into this project including, but not limited to, redoing the introduction graphics, editing text, fixing various problems within the game (there were complete areas not accessible that are now) and more.  This is how updates to classic titles should be handled, there is no “new” content created by the developer to “improve” the game.  No, what is “new” is just stuff that was, for some reason, not accessible in the original Commodore 64 version due to errors of some sort in the game code.
