Back in November we covered the looming release of Targa, aka Rendering Ranger, for the Super Nintendo. For those that don’t remember Targa was a Japanese exclusive and a prototype of the English version was found and purchased. NintendoAge released a, very, limited run of cartridges (150 to be exact) after which the new ROM would be released to the general public. That time has come. The ROM is now available to download, free of charge.
Targa was created by the man behind the Turrican games, Manfred Trenz. Sadly, Targa was his last game. If you are a longtime fan of Turrican then you will get a lot out of Targa as there are plenty of little things that sprinkled throughout. This was a game that you can tell Manfred Trenz wanted to program, not one he was just cashing a check on.
The prototype release on NintendoAge went for about $85 (within North America) to $100 (worldwide). That is quite high for a game but considering it was only available in one single run of 150 cartridges it kind of still sucks. Why these releases are not made more widely available is beyond me. Making them more widely available could lower the price, allow the people behind this to make a bit of money which could be put back into acquiring more prototypes in the future.
Anyhow, Targa in cartridge form is long gone and won’t be made available again. For the rest of us that were interested, but close to $100 for a physical copy was just too much, there is the ROM release. Thankfully the ROM release is freely available. If you have the necessary hardware, such as a mod cartridge, then you can play this prototype ROM on real hardware.
Head over to NintendoAge to grab your copy of Targa while it is available.
