During the period between 2014 and 2016 there will be 50 new Atari Jaguar titles available.  That is a lot games, no matter how you slice it.  There were only 82 games for the Atari Jaguar released.  That is counting CD-ROM and cartridge releases.  That is not many at all.  In a three year period there will be nearly that many titles released by the homebrew community.  Talk about not letting a console die.  Hell, there is even an upcoming console that will be using the original molds that Atari used for the Jaguar.  That brings me to this new homebrew title, at least new as far as the Atari Jaguar.  Barbarian was originally a computer title from the 1980’s.  Think a basic Street Fighter II with the capability to decapitate your opponent, half a decade prior to the release of Mortal Kombat in arcades.

Barbarian for the Atari Jaguar is based on the Atari ST version of the game.  The Sega Genesis version of Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior is based on the Commodore Amiga version of the game.  It seems that the Atari ST/Atari Jaguar version of Barbarian is just slightly more graphically impressive than the Amiga/Genesis version.

Over on the Atari Age forums members are conversing with the developer behind Barbarian for Jaguar.  Steps that have been taken are changing the speed of the characters from “superfast” to a much more manageable speed.  One member has even shared a CD-ROM image and DVD case cover for Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior.

This is one of the titles that I talked about earlier in this article.  Here at Retro Gaming Magazine we have covered many Atari Jaguar titles in 2014 and have kicked off 2015 with a few already.  As these games near an interesting level of development (more than just an announcement) we will cover them.
