Preview- Mad Wizard- A Candelabra Chronicle Released for Nintendo Entertainment System

The Nintendo Entertainment System is seeing a new release called Mad Wizard- A Candelabra Chronicle, a title we have covered in the past (here).  Mad Wizard is a creation by Sly Dog Studios who have teamed up with RetroUSB to release a physical see through blue cartridge that is compatible with the Nintendo NES.  Fans of the classic titles like Mega Man, Dizzy and Solomon’s Key will be right at home with this homebrew release.

Mad Wizard A Candelabra Chronicle Nintendo Entertainment System NES Sly Dog Studios homebrew (3)Mad Wizard- A Candelabra Chronicle features 128 individual screens of action, and puzzle solving, entertainment that will surely challenge the best retrogamer.  You will be tasked with completing each room by creating bridges, new platforms and fending off the enemies that want your blood.

Your wizard has the capability to hover and cast other spells such as creating blocks to stand on, bridges to walk across and more.  Sly Dog Studios have studied the greats and created a title that is unique in its own right while drawing inspiration from the pros.

Mad Wizard A Candelabra Chronicle Nintendo Entertainment System NES Sly Dog Studios homebrew (4)In the preview you start out with just a hover spell.  This spell only allows hovering one space high and moving left or right one space.  You also have the capability to shoot a projectile at nearby enemies.  Not going to get very far with just these powers.  Thankfully you will find more spells which will make your quest easier.  The capability to make a bridge, hover higher and the ability to move left/right farther are some of the spells you will find in Mad Wizard- A Candelabra Chronicle for the Nintendo NES.

The controls are not perfect, it is sometimes a little nerve wracking positioning your wizard correctly.  He doesn’t move a little at a time but instead a full square on the screen, though with just a tap he will turn in place (this led to more frustration for me than I would have liked).
