When id Software created Doom they intentionally left it open so that fans could update the game with new levels and enemies. This open minded mentality also allowed Doom to be relevant for many gamers for decades after its release. This mod adapts the classic Doom with the current big trend in homemade media known as “selfies”- holding the camera away from yourself but facing you so that the picture is an extreme close-up of your face. The results are pretty hilarious for fans of the series and a reason for people that don’t get either to shake their heads.
Linguica, a Doom modder, has created this mod called InstadDoom. What InstadDoom does is add over 35 filters to the game that greatly resemble those of the popular picture sharing network, Instagram. Also included in this mod is a “selfie stick” that allows you to take the pictures you know you want to share. Remember all of those enemies that you would run away from when you first encountered them so you could regroup? Now you can take a selfie with them while you work on how the hell you are going to kill them and continue on your mission. That or you can capture your last moments before they tear you to shreds. Either one is possible.
“You can only take so many pictures of your food slaughtering demons!” Linguica wrote. “You want to show the world how hott you are while you do it, and now you can! Use the latest in stick technology to get more of yourself in the shot! It’s American President Approved!” Quote pulled from Gamespot article.
This is just one more mod in the world of Doom which is nothing new to oldschool gamers. What is unique is the style of this mod and the media flurry it is creating for the classic id Software title. Will Doom ever die?
