Hardware hacks are not all that new, if we are talking about older consoles. When you get into the newer stuff, hardware hacks are fewer and farther between. Take this one for example, as shown in the pictures and video it appear the Playstation 4 has been equipped with a NES cartridge slot. Read on to find out what is going on here.
Okay, this is a hardware mod, of sorts. This is a clever looking modification that will allow you to use Nintendo Entertainment System style cartridges with your Playstation 4. The cartridge contains a 2.5” hard drive that contains the game content. There is some major modification to the Playstation 4, such as messing with the motherboard, so if you are not comfortable with this, stop now.
You will need a SATA extender, some screws and other little things that are listed on after the jump below. Basically stuff that is available at most computer stores or on sites like Newegg. Doing some legwork and slight editing to the setup could yield a Playstation 4 that is playing games off of say, Sega Genesis/SNES/Atari 2600 style cartridges.
There is a slight disclaimer that comes with this mod. Shown off in the video are cartridges that use the 2.5” hard drives mentioned earlier. The creator of this project states that you can use 3.5” hard drives but those will require an external power source to run them. The 2.5” drives will run fine off the power supplied by the motherboard. This may limit the size of your cartridges but will not hinder the coolness factor involved with this type of mod.
The cartridges are created with the Ultimaker 3D printer, files are available on Eleccelerator.com (link below). This is an interesting mod that uses easy to find hardware (after you remove the 3D printer requirement) and a bit of dedication.

It is quite a unique mod, that is for sure.
So if I understand correctly, he install a new hard drive in his PS4, download a digital version of a game, close his PS4, remove the new hard drive and redo it all over for a new game? All of this while the said hard drive is inside a Nes cartridge?
Don’t know if it’s the most dumb or the most genious thing ever!
Apparently it only requires opening the PS4 only once to install the SATA extender. After that it is a case of simply swapping out the cartridges.
