Prototype: C64′ s Missing Populous Found

After recently receiving a disk containing the games code by original programmers Frank Hugenroth and André Hugenroth, http://www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64/ has recently updated their site informing readers, the missing Populous game that had planned to be released onto the C64 has been found.

Populous made a name for itself on the Amiga, but Bullfrog and Electronic Arts had planned to release it onto the C64 as well all those years ago, but those plans were canceled.Populous Commodore 64 retro game retrogaming prototype unreleased (1)

While the C64 version never saw the light of day, a demo of the long lost piece of software has surfaced online, allowing gamers to sample it.  The Populous demo has many Amiga version similarities but lacks much of the gameplay.  Apparently the C64 Populous demo disk was going to be pitched to EA Germany as the reason for it not looking a finished product. Frank Hugenorth stated that EA Germany declined because to go ahead with the project as they felt the market had moved on from the C64 and that the demo Frank and Andre made, been done just for fun and it never got any further than that.
