New Game: Dizzy Style Game Called Mystery Comes to ZX Spectrum

The ZX Spectrum is a platform that I have tried to cover as much as possible, especially since covering the Amstrad CPC has been mostly picked up by Ali Halabi.  The Spectrum, for those that don’t know is a United Kingdom based computer from the 80’s.  Have you noticed that these classic computers are, for some reason, being kept alive by fans more often than people thought they would?  I mean, we are still seeing games for computers that are over 30 years old, same for consoles.  Mystery is not just the genre that that previous train of thought belongs to but the name of a new Dizzy style game for the ZX Spectrum.

What Mystery is, is an action adventure title that is set in the 2D style- about what you would expect from the ZX Spectrum.  The graphics are quite colorful and the animation on the main character is pretty good, for example when he is walking.  The walking animation looks fluid and is quite impressive, especially compared to other titles even ones on more powerful platforms.

The storyline behind Mystery is, well, a mystery.  All I really know about this game is what you see in the video and that it is heavily influenced by Dizzy (another popular Spectrum homebrew title).  Judging off the video it appear that you have landed in the jungle, probably in search of treasure.  It appears that one hit from the jungle dwelling creatures is an instant death, no life bar, no multiple hits.  One hit and you lose a life.  Pretty harsh by today’s standards but this was the norm for the time period that the ZX Spectrum was commercially viable.  In other words, if you are easily frustrated you probably should not bother with retro titles like Mystery.  For everyone else, the gamers that enjoy a challenge and are not scared of it, keep an eye on Mystery.
